The Carnival of Venice

The Carnival of Venice became very important in Middle Age. Venice is the ideal city for a Carnival, for the winding streets, the romantic bridges and the squares, especially S. Marco square; the Carnival of Venice is an original feast with many events, and it's famous in the world. "Bautta" is the symbolic mask of this Carnival: it is born in the XVIII century and it's arrived at those days equal. This mask has a "Face" with a little mask made of silk, velvet, cloth or cardboard that is possible to take off from face and to hang on the right ear, and it has, besides, a lace cape, sometimes pointed beard or "lattice" with a hood and a black hat with three points, called "tricorno", and a black or red cloak made of cloth or silk, called "tabarro". Usually rich people decorated this custom with gold ornaments and pointed beards, but the customs don't must be recognizable in order to hide the real identity of the persons.
In the Carnival of Venice, during the XVIII century, it was possible to see some masks of the "Commedia dell'arte", that, in this period, became famous with Carlo Goldoni. Pantaloon and Columbine are Venetian masks. In the XIX century Venice became an Italian city and, then, during the Carnival it was possible to see masks that came from other Italian regions, like Arlecchino, Brighella, Doctor Balanzone and Punchinello.
This masks, with jugglers, puppet showmen, eaters of fire, and masks of every kind are the main characters of Carnival of Venice that has a primary objective: to be an entertainment for all, young and old people.
