The
Carnival of Cento
The Carnival of Cento, in the province of Ferrara, is
very ancient, in fact we have news about this event already since the
XVII century, thanks to the painter Gian Francesco Barbieri,
called "Guercino".
Now this Carnival, patronized by Ivano Monservisi, is famous in the
world; in fact the winner wagon of this Carnival parades, during the
"Champions night", in the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro,
the city united with Cento in a twinship since 1993. During this occasion,
that many people usually watch on TV, in the Italian group, that precedes
the cart, there are often many Italian stars of TV, music
and cinema, like Sabrina Salerno, Susy Blady e Fabrizio Roversi, Renzo
Arbore and many others. Every year, during the Carnival of Cento, called
"European Carnival", there are famous people
too.
Cento is equidistant from Bologna, Ferrara and Modena, and it is
easily reachable by car covering the highways A1, A13 and A14.
The
Carnival of Sciacca
The Carnival of Sciacca, in the province of Agrigento, is an ancient
recurrence, celebrated since the XVI century, that derives,
perhaps, from the Carnival of Florence. The first one that give news
about this event is the canonical Mario Ciaccio. This
Carnival is based on "lu gabbu" (the mockery);
in fact, countrymen and herdsmen, with painted faces and funny hats,
exchanged insults, motets and jokes. Another custom was that one to
burn, during the night of Shrove Tuesday, "lu Nannu"
a straw puppet with the clothes of an illustrious notable, symbol of
the end of Carnival. "Peppe 'Nnappa" is the
symbolic mask of modern Carnival of Sciacca and it opens the manifestation
inviting all the people to the entertainment and the joy. The allegorical
wagons, made by associations that since a long time work for this event,
are the protagonists of this Carnival; they are accompanied by groups
of people that sing, dance and enliven the carnival procession. During
the carnival procession, you can see the new-entry of the last ten-year
period: the small satirical carts, that were born from typical sayings
of Sciacca.
The city is easily reachable by car from Catania covering the highway
A19 and the SS 115 to Agrigento and Trapani; and from Palermo covering
the A29 and the SS 115 to Agrigento.
